75th Annual Golden Globes: 2018 Categories and Nominees
Now that the holidays are over and new years resolutions are in full swing, I can't think of a better way to ring in 2018 by honoring the 'best' in 2017 film and television.
In the immortal words of Nietzsche's Doctrine of Eternal Recurrence (or Rust Cohle for you telephiles) - “Time is a flat circle. Everything we have done or will do, we will do over and over and over again—forever.” And as industry writers and film/television enthusiasts will tell you, everything we have done or will do all circles back to another round of awards season banter, starting with the 75th annual Golden Globe awards.
Guillermo del Toro’s The Shape of Water leads the way with a total of seven film nominations (matching La La Land's 2016 total) followed by six nominations for Steven Spielberg’s The Post and Martin McDonagh’s Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. Perhaps most notable is Greta Gerwig's splendid directorial debut Lady Bird earning four nominations. HBO's Big Little Lies leads all TV categories with six nominations, while FX’s limited series Feud: Bette and Joan earned four nominations, followed by Fargo: Season 3, The Handmaid’s Tale, and This Is Us each earning three nominations. By the way, I'm still tilting over The Leftovers Season 3 getting ZERO respect. 0.
The 75th annual Golden Globes are presented by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) and signal the official kickoff of the film industry's awards season which culminates to the 90th annual Academy Awards in March. That's three long months of amicable banter for those who do social media! Your timeline is amicable right? I suppose you'll know (if you don't already) when media icon and philanthropist, Oprah Winfrey gives her acceptance speech as 2018's Cecil B. DeMille Award recipient, given "to a talented individual who has made an incredible impact on the world of entertainment."
Seth Meyers will emcee the Globes among a solid list of A-list presenters including Halle Berry, Carol Burnett, Emilia Clarke, Penelope Cruz, Gal Gadot, Greta Gerwig, Hugh Grant, Kit Harington, Neil Patrick Harris, Chris Hemsworth, Isabelle Huppert, Shirley MacLaine, J.K. Simmons, Sharon Stone, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Alicia Vikander, Kerry Washington, and Emma Watson.
Check out the complete list of categories and their nominees below. Golden Globes air live from Los Angeles on Jan. 7 at 5 p.m. PT/8 p.m. ET on NBC.
