Joe Johnston’s Captain America graced cinema screens in 2011 receiving humble reactions from fans and critics alike. Captain America didn’t break new ground in the Superhero genre, it merely fitted in. We have become accustomed to the dark, gritty, brooding superhero but Captain America was too nice to join his disturbed counterparts who we’ve all become obsessed with. Not featuring any stereotypical aesthetics of a superhero film wasn’t a bad decision by Johnston.

In Captain America’s terms it worked. Plenty of charming scenes with great character inter-actions litter the film, giving us plenty of fun parts to kick back and splendour at. What was detrimental to Captain America was it’s failure to stand above the rest. It’s noble story didn’t quite pack the punch we come to expect from superhero films.

With the release of Captain America: The Winter Soldier in 2014, we where given a film that had grown in statue. What made The Winter Soldier a success was it's narrative which had become incredibly strong, making it an almost straight up conspiracy drama. Chris Evans has certainly grown into the role of Captain America and in this film brought a real sense of care.

The Winter Soldier intertwined sub-plots perfectly with it's flat out impressive action sequences. The Winter Soldier is a valiant, ardent and very satisfying second chapter making Captain America go from a C+ to a much deserved B.
