Composer Hans Zimmer Retires from Superhero Films

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Oscar-winning and fan-favourite composer Hans Zimmer is hanging up his own kind of cape and cowl, walking away from the world of superheroes that's shaped much of his career in the past decade.

"I have officially retired from the superhero business," Zimmer told BBC Hardtalk, following the release of Batman v Superman and the accompanying soundtrack, which proved he and Junkie XL were a collaborative powerhouse and showed no signs that Zimmer was slowing down.

Having composed Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, Man of Steel, Batman v Superman, on top of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, and the musician admitted that he feels burnt-out by the genre.

"[Batman v Superman] was very hard for me to do, to try to find new language. I did 'Batman Begins' with Chris 12 years ago, so 'The Dark Knight' trilogy might be three movies to you, to me it was 11 years of my life."

While superhero films have been bolstered by Hans Zimmer's work, particularly at Warner Bros., the seasoned composer isn't walking away from music altogether. Having composed films such as Interstellar and Gladiator, the composer will be back in the sound studio for Nolan's upcoming WWII drama Dunkirk.
