Junkie XL Talks Composing Batman v Superman, Deadpool

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Junkie XL only became Junkie XL in 1997, when he decided to go it solo. Before that, he was a band member, known by his real name Tom Holkenborg.

Eventually, film pulled him in, and he spent several years behind the scenes, learning the environment, committing years to assisting and interning while putting his own music on hold.

And it's paid off. Since breaking through, His scores in recent years include 300: Rise of an Empire, Mad Max: Fury Road, Black Mass, and in the next two months we see two very different superhero properties get his musical treatment.

On scoring Deadpool, the composer said that "it's when [emotions] get combines that things get really difficult. And that is something I really dealt with on Deadpool... It's the sequence of emotions that makes it really hard in film scoring, not necessarily just one."

"... it goes back to Greek mythology, you know? Half god-half-man, people that have extraordinary powers - it's always fascinated people," he said, stating that superhero movies are bigger than we are.

While being quite close-lipped on his Batman v Superman score, particularly the Batman side of things (Hans Zimmer handling the Superman side), Holkenborg did say "All I can say is that it was a long, really intense process where Hans and I had a great collaboration together, and it turned out to be a really fantastic score. We're both very, very happy with the music."

He dismissed rumours that he is composing the Wonder Woman soundtrack, and calls Deadpool a "unique animal." Clearly, he is a man who worked extremely hard to get where he is, putting it all on the line to come and aim high for film composing. Junkie XL is another example of the ability to put it all on the line for a dream, and realising it.

Deadpool arrives Feb 12, and Batman v Superman premieres March 25.
