Suicide Squad Aiming for PG-13 Rating

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell Despite many suggestions that Suicide Squad would be a much darker and sinister trek into the DC universe, leading to speculation on an R rating, Warner Bros. is pursuing a PG-13 for the 2016 franchise film.

Producer Charles Roven told Collider, regarding whether they ever considered targeting an R rating, that it's always been planned for a PG-13 rating to slot in with the rest of the DC lineup.

"We really want to make these films tonally consistent," Roven said. "So our plan right now is to make all these films PG-13."

Roven also discussed the creative aspect that must be allowed for in determining these 'business' decisions. "it's also a creative endeavor, so you want to leave yourself open to changing your mind, doing something different, being inspired, that's the whole process of filmmaking."

While this affects the film's capabilities in terms of violence, blood, language, it is certainly a marketing decision that allows for a younger audience to access this film just as easily as the rest of the franchise's entries.

Hopefully, the film's themes and its aesthetic don't suffer for the decision. The title has the word 'suicide' in it after all. There's plenty of implications in what we've seen so far to suggest the film could struggle to maintain its toned down appearance, and will it be noticeable when it does?

Suicide Squad arrives in theaters on August 5, 2016.
