Suicide Squad: Director David Ayer on Dealing with the Bad Guys, Fitting into the DC Universe

HaydnSpurrell HaydnSpurrell David Ayer, who wrote on top of his directing duties for Suicide Squad, discussed how he feels about the unique opportunity to veer away from the stock standard industry superhero story.

"We all need good guys and everything - yay, good guys - but at the end of the day, they're kinda boring. They're always going to do the right thing. When you're dealing with the baddies, it's easy to get ahead of the audience and invert expectations."

On the Joker, Ayer dubbed Jared Leto's take as "the king of Planet Joker", but the director was also thrilled at the chance to implement that character's polar opposite in his film. "We made him fight," Ayer said with a laugh, regarding Ben Affleck's Batman joining the shoot. "He's awesome (as Batman)... you really sense that but for the grace of god he himself would be doing some really foul stuff out in the world."

Regarding the film's place in a larger, expanded universe, Ayer took a playful dig at the Marvel standard. "For me, it's a little more than just dropping a cut scene in the end credits to link projects. You really have to be thinking three movies downrange and how today's movie will impact more later-cycle projects."

The film arrives August 5th, sure to satiate DC fan's hunger after March's Batman v Superman release.
