'The Little Mermaid' Live-Action Film being Considered at Disney
Disney can do no wrong at the moment. It has two of the biggest properties in the entire entertainment industry in Marvel and Star Wars, and its line of animated films have rarely put a foot wrong. Now, it's taking new steps, adapting its classic animated films into live-action re-enactments.
And so far, so good. Alice in Wonderland, Maleficent, and last year's Cinderella have all proven that fairytale hits can make the transition with immense success. The Jungle Book is the latest success story, and Alice Through the Looking Glass is receiving solid reviews ahead of its release.
Next up, we have Bill Condon's Beauty and the Beast, which had a teaser reveal that's kicked up anticipation. Now, Deadline is reporting that the studio is considering The Little Mermaid as their next live-action project.
The 1989 animated musical was a huge hit, winning awards and launching an age that saw Aladdin and Beauty and the Beast among others come to life. So it seems a logical next step. While the job would be hard, given the underwater dependence of the source material, it's certainly not off the cards.
Universal also has a live-action adaptation of the property in the works, though that certainly didn't deter Disney, who created their own Jungle Book despite Warner Bros. having one currently being developed.
