‘The Visit’

Currently on Flixster/Rotten Tomatoes it is rated fresh 62% (Critics) and 67% (Users)

Becca (Olivia DeJonge) and Tyler (Ed Oxenbould) are packing their bags to stay at their estranged grandparents house for one week. Their mother (Kathryn Hahn) has a strained relationship with the grandparents due to when the mother was younger she left her childhood home and ran away with Becca and Tyler’s father, which her parents disapproved of their relationship.

Becca and Tyler have mixed emotions of visiting their grandparents but they figure that this weeklong adventure would assist in a few things.

1.) Their mother has a upcoming Royal Caribbean cruise lined up with her current boyfriend.

2.) They hope that with creating a documentary of their visit; they could find a way to get their mother some needed closure, and to settle their differences from fifteen years ago.

Once they arrive to the small town their Grandparents are from we are introduced to Nana (Deanna Dunagan) and Pop Pop (Peter McRobbie).

We all know that Grandparents love to spoil their grandchildren, by giving them cookies, and treats and letting them play but they also have strict rules about bedtime.

Nana and Pop Pop remind the Becca and Tyler that bedtime is at 9:30pm and they are not to come out of their room.

Let’s just say that it gets really really creepy at night time!

Without giving away any spoilers; Let’s continue…

What I struggled with on this film...

There is a couple of things that I struggled with on this film…

Misc

However, since this is a M. Night film I can’t really talk about it because it may technically spoil the film.

I will counter this until the film has been released for purchase and a couple months have past.

But if you have seen it and are dying to know.. you can send us a message and we can further discuss the plot holes this film had. :)

What I LOVED…

Favorite Character in this entire film (hands down) was Tyler!

At first I thought he was a little much when they were on the train, but he became a favorite after you saw how controlling/perfectionist his sister was.

I absolutely loved how insteading of saying a swear word (since he was at Nana and Pop Pops) he decided that he would replace a curse word with a name of a pop star.

Ex: Stubbed toe on the bed post… “AHHH SHAKIRA!!”

My favorite scene when a pop star name was used…was when they were playing Yahtzee, and the grandparents instantly began to act very very strange and the brother quietly and nervously said under his breathe say “Katy Perry”

There was sooo many creepy scenes in this film, that it seriously made you feel pretty bad that these children had to experience this at their first visit to Nana and Pop Pops!

Examples of Horrific scenes!

-Under the house hide and seek,

-Nana’s solo fun adventures throughout the house at nighttime,

-Being asked a couple of times to clean out the oven by getting inside it.

Nightmares were made of this…

Overall Thoughts

I know that since M. Night hugely successful film The Sixth Sense had debut; It has been difficult for him to meet those standards that were placed on him by the critics and the viewers.

He’s known for plot twist within his films and he didn’t disappoint with The Visit.

However, I have always had a strong intuition of how his films will end, and within the first five minutes into the film I already drew accurate conclusions of what the plot twist was.

If you can separate this film from The Sixth Sense; and just enjoy the film for what it is..

Which is “a mega creepy, Nightmares filled visit to Grandma/Grandpa’s house with comic relief coming from your gangsta little brother.”

Then you will enjoy this film… Well in a creepy way you will! =)
