Warner Bros. confirm David Ayer as director of 'Suicide Squad'

Tom Hardy Drops Out of Suicide Squad; Jake Gyllenhaal Also Passes on the Role

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong The Wrap has revelled that Tom Hardy has decided to not take the role of Rick Flagg in David Ayer, Warner Bros. and DC Comics, Suicide Squad. This in turn led DC and Warner Bros. to offer the role to Jake Gyllenhaal.

New reports are now circulating that Gyllenhaal has also rejected the role in the big budget comic book movie. For Hardy, his decision to detach himself from the project is due to scheduling conflicts. As for Gyllenhaal, Variety reported he simply passed on the chance to play the field commander of the super-villain team. Gyllenhaal is in a rich vein of form having a lot of success and critical acclaim for his most recent performance in Nightcrawler. It makes sense that he doesn't see this role as the next logical step in his career. In the past, Gyllenhaal has courted for comic book roles including Doctor Strange and The Green Hornet, but that was due in part because director Kevin Smith was attached to those projects.

Written and directed by David Ayer, Suicide Squad will star Will Smith as Deadshot, Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn, Jared Leto as The Joker, Jai Courtney as Captain Boomerang, Cara Delevingne as Enchantress, and Viola Davis as Amanda Waller. The film is set to be released 5th August 5 2016.
