Will UK Leaving EU Have An Impact On 'Game of Thrones' Funding?

JamesArthurArmstrong JamesArthurArmstrong Today marked a historic moment in UK politics as the British public voted to leave the European Union. However, will the UK's decision to leave the EU affect the biggest TV show in Game of Thrones' funding?

The quick answer to that question is, no. The HBO drama series is primarily shot on location in Northern Ireland, which being a part of the UK, will leave the EU.

The Northern Ireland-based production is funded by NI Screen and Invest NI, as well as being enrolled in the UK Film and TV Tax Incentives program. The first few seasons received money from the European Regional Development Fund — created to encourage economic growth across the EU. If the show was still receiving this funding from the European Regional Development Fund, it would've most certainly been impacted by the Leave vote. The filming incentives GoT gets from NI Screen, Invest NI won't impact on its funding.

HBO said in a statement: "We do not anticipate that the result of the EU Referemdum will have any material effect on HBO producing Game of Thrones."

NI Screen also confirmed this morning that its funding will stay in place after the Brexit vote, saying: "This statement is to confirm that Northern Ireland Screen's production funding comes from the Northern Ireland Executive through Invest NI and does not use monies provided from European funded programs. We look for to business as usual."
