'Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker' tracking for a $170 million to $200 million opening weekend, $40 million in previews

ZachPerilstein ZachPerilstein Disney Reporter Episode IX’s preview haul is still lower than ‘The Force Awakens’ and ‘The Last Jedi’ but that is nothing to be concerned about.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker brought in a massive $40 million haul at the North American box office. The new Star Wars came in below the totals of the previous outings in The Last Jedi ($45 million) and The Force Awakens ($57 million).

Still, The Rise of Skywalker pulled the fifth-best preview performance of all time. Rogue One only did $29 million on its preview night, and Solo only got $14 million on its preview night.

Rise of Skywalker is tracking for a $170 million to $200 million opening weekend according to industry experts. Disney is currently forecasting a $160 million opening weekend.

Rise of Skywalker is supposed to be the finale of the Skywalker saga which began back in George Lucas’ 1977 original A New Hope.

J.J. Abrams returned to direct the film. Abrams directed The Force Awakens which was the first installment in the sequel trilogy.

The counterprogramming for Star Wars this year is quite interesting. Tom Hooper’s Cats based classic Andrew Lloyd Webber musical earned only $550,000 in 2,500 theaters. Cats is tracking for $14 million to $17 million opening weekend. Bombshell also opens nationwide.

Rey (Daisy Ridley), Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Finn (John Boyega), Lando Calrissian (Billy Dee Williams), Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill), General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher), and more all return in The Rise of Skywalker. As the Resistance takes on the menacing First Order in a battle for the sake of the galaxy.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker is now in theaters.
